Cherchell

Seaport in Algeria, in Cheliff department, 90 km/56 mi west of Algiers; population (2001 est) 29,600. The port is shallow and exposed to northerly winds. Nearby are marble quarries and iron and lignite mines. The town was originally a Carthaginian trading station called Iol and in 40 BC was captured by the Romans, who renamed it Caesarea. Under the Romans it became one of the most important trading posts on the African coast. The mines of Caesarea are still visible.
