Cherepovets

City in the Vologda oblast (region) of the northwestern Russian Federation, 375 km/233 mi north of Moscow; population (1996 est) 321,000. The city is located near the northern shore of the Rybinsk Reservoir on the Volga, and stands at the southern end of the Volga–Baltic Waterway. Iron and steel foundries, chemical plants, and shipyards are the city's principal industries. Cherepovets was founded in 1777 on the site of a monastery.

Cherepovets was originally a tax-exempt settlement.
