Circassia

Former name of an area of the northern Caucasus. The dominant principality in the region until c. 1700, it was ceded to Russia by the Ottomans in 1829 and now forms part of the Karachay-Cherkessia oblast of the Russian Federation.

The Mountain Peoples' Congress convened in Tiflis (Georgia) and proclaimed on 11 May 1918 the North-Caucasian Federation, known in history as the Republic of Highlanders, which consisted of seven entities: Abkhazia, Cherkessia, Kabarda, Balkaria, Ossetia, Chechnya and Daghestan.
