Chernov, Vladimir (1953– )

Russian baritone. He studied in Moscow and at La Scala, and followed at career with the Kirov Opera, St Petersburg, from 1983, as Germont, Figaro, and Valentine. His US debut was at Boston in 1988, as Marcello, and he sang Posa in Don Carlos at Los Angeles in 1990, and at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1992. He performed with the Scottish Opera and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1990, as Don Carlo in La Forza del Destino/The Force of Destiny, and as Rossini's Figaro. He was one of the most highly valued baritones of his generation, and sang Stankar in the Metropolitan Opera House premiere production of Verdi's Stiffelio.
