Keane

British rock band. Formed in East Sussex, England, the trio's hit singles include ‘Everybody's Changing’ (2002) and ‘This is the Last Time’ (2003). Their debut LP, Hopes and Fears, featuring the hit single ‘Bedshaped’, went multi-platinum in 2004.

Tom Chaplin (1979– ; vocals), Tim Rice-Oxley (1976– ; piano), and Richard Hughes (1975– ; drums), school friends from Tonbridge School in Kent, formed Keane in 1997. Initially a cover band with guitarist Dominic Scott 1997–2001, covering popular rock music from Oasis, U2, Elton John, and the Beatles, the group independently released their debut single ‘Call Me What You Like’ in 2000 and their debut album Wolf At The Door the following year. The band did not replace Scott on guitar, and their music became heavily piano-based.

The band's piano-driven rock with catchy pop melodies and melancholic ballads has been compared to Coldplay and Radiohead. The band initially formed as the Lotus Eaters and renamed themselves Keane after a woman who looked after them when they were children. They signed with Simon Williams's Fierce Panda label in 2002 and with Island UK the following year. Hopes and Fears became the UK's second highest selling album of 2004.
