Cherry Valley

Cherry Valley

Town in Cherry Valley township, Otsego County, central New York, USA, 80 km/50 mi west-northwest of Albany; population (1990) 617. It is best known as the site of a 1778 massacre, in which Tories and Indians under the command of Walter Butler and Joseph Brant razed the town and killed over 40 residents and Patriot soldiers. Cherry Valley is also known for its medicinal springs.

Settled in 1740, it was once a stop on the westward-bound Cherry Valley Turnpike, now US Route 20.
