Chester County

County in southeastern Pennsylvania, USA; area 1,963 sq km/758 sq mi; population (1990) 376,400. The county is bordered to the northeast by the Schuylkill River and to the south by Delaware and Maryland. Its seat is West Chester. The county is diverse; in the east are the Philadelphia suburbs of Paoli and Berwyn; in the south are Kennett Square and other mushroom producing centres. The county also produces grapes. Largely agricultural, it has undergone a suburban housing boom since the 1980s.
