Chesters

Park containing the site of the Roman station of Cilurnum, on the banks of the North Tyne near Chollerford in Northumberland, England. Cilurnum is one of the most important forts of Hadrian's Wall, since 1987 a World Heritage Site. It was a garrison for 500 troops. The fort site is managed by English Heritage.

Remains of its gateway and streets can still be seen, and its military bathhouse, between the fort and the river, is well preserved. Much excavation work has been carried out. A collection of Roman artefacts is housed in a museum in the park of Chesters.

In 1832 the estate of Chesters was inherited by the classical scholar John Clayton, who carried out important archaeological investigations at the site.
