Chevalier, Maurice (1888–1972)

French singer and actor. Known for his charm and wit, he made numerous films, including Innocents of Paris (1929), Love Me Tonight (1932), The Merry Widow (1934), and Gigi (1958). His signature tune was the Richard Whiting and Leo Robin song ‘Louise’ (1929).

Chevalier began his career singing in cafés in Paris, France, at the age of 12, then became dancing partner to the revue artiste Mistinguett at the Folies-Bergère. Other films include The Love Parade (1929), The Smiling Lieutenant (1931), Can-Can (1960), and Fanny (1961). He received an honorary Academy Award in 1959 for contributions to the entertainment world for more than fifty years.
