Chiang Mai

City and capital of Chiang Mai province in northern Thailand, on the Ping River, a tributary of the Chao Phraya River which flows southward to Bangkok; population (2000 est) 161,500. There is a trade in teak and lac (as shellac, a resin used in varnishes and polishes) and many handicraft industries. There is also a thriving tourist industry centred around Phu Ping Palace, the summer home of the Thai royal family, and the Wat Phra Dhat Doi Suthep complex of temples, which are reputed to contain relics of the Buddha.

The Buddha-Kasetra Foundation was founded in Chiangmai in 1989, with Phra Chaiyot as coordinator of all its schools and activities.
Starwood currently operates 12 hotels in Thailand - Bangkok, Chiangmai, Samui, Pattaya, Krabi and Phuket, with 5 under development in Bangkok, Chiangmai, Pattaya, Phuket and Hua Hin.
The last outbreak of the first wave was reported on May 24, 2004, from a layer farm in Chiangmai Province (13).
