Chiara, Maria (1939– )

Italian soprano. She made her debut in Venice, in 1965, as Desdemona, sang Liù at Verona in 1969, with Domingo, and repeated the role on her debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1973 (she returned for Desdemona in 1978). In 1970 she appeared at Munich and Vienna, and in 1977 made her New York Metropolitan Opera House debut in La traviata. She opened the 1985–86 season at La Scala, as Aïda, and her other roles include Maria Stuarda, Anna Bolena, Elisabeth de Valois, and Amelia Boccanegra. She sang the Il trovatore/The Troubadour Leonora at Turin in 1991.
