Chiba

City and port in Kanto region, on Tokyo Bay, east Honshu island, Japan, 40 km/25 mi west of Tokyo; population (1995 est) 856,900. Industries include shipbuilding, petrochemicals, paper, steel, and textiles. The centre of a coastal industrial zone, with one of the busiest ports in Japan, it imports crude oil, iron ore, and coking coal, and exports steel. Much of the building in the city has taken place on reclaimed land.

The university was founded in 1949.
