Chibougamau

City in south-central Québec, Canada, 200 km/125 mi northwest of Lake St-Jean and 500 km/310 mi north of Montréal; population (1991) 8,900. With Chapais, 38 km/24 mi to the southwest, it developed in the 1950s to exploit rich copper deposits. Gold, silver, and zinc are mined as well, and there are sawmills. The area retains a sizeable Cree population.
