Chichele, Henry

Chichele, Henry (c. 1362–1443)

English Archbishop of Canterbury. He was the founder of All Souls' College, Oxford University, in 1438. He became bishop of St David's in 1408, and archbishop of Canterbury in 1414. He was a royal envoy to France and Rome on several occasions, and was an active opponent of the Lollards. In 1437 Chichele founded St Bernard's (now St John's) College for Cistercians. He also founded the Chichele Chest at Oxford for the relief of poor students, and gave generously to Canterbury Cathedral. Chichele was born in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England. He was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford University.
