Chickahominy

River in Virginia, rising northwest of Richmond; length 110 km/70 mi. It is a tributary of the James River, which it joins 35 km/22 mi south of Richmond. During the American Civil War many battles took place near the river, including in 1862 the battles of Fair Oaks, Mechanicsville, Gaines' Mill, Savage's Station, and White Oak Swamp, and in 1864 the Battle of Cold Harbor.
