Chico

City in Butte County, north California, 125 km/78 mi northwest of Sacramento; population (1990) 40,000. Surrounded by an agricultural region producing rice, fruits, truck crops, walnuts, and, especially, almonds, Chico is a trade hub and packing and processing centre. It has a variety of light manufactures, as well as a brewery and a publishing industry. California State University at Chico (1887) dominates the city's culture.

Chico was founded in 1860 by John Bidwell (1819-1900), who laid out the community on land of his Rancho Arroyo Chico (Spanish ‘little stream’). The Bidwell Mansion state historic park includes his home. Bidwell Park is one of the largest municipal parks in the USA.
