Chicoutimi

City in southeastern Québec, Canada, between Jonquière (to the west) and La Baie (to the east), 175 km/109 mi north of Québec City; population (2006) 154,900 (Saguenay Chicoutimi-Jonquière). Its industries include lumber, pulp, paper, aluminium, furniture, wrought iron, leather goods, and textiles. Local hydroelectric projects have also contributed to the city's growth as a rail junction and regional commercial centre.

Situated at the head of tides on the Saguenay River, Chicoutimi was founded by the French in 1676 as a trading post. It began to develop in the 1840s around the sawmill industry. Chicoutimi is the seat of a branch (1969) of the Université du Québec.
