Chidambaram

Town in Tamil Nadu state, southeast India, 200 km/ south of Chennai (formerly Madras); population (2001 est) 65,500. It is a Hindu religious centre for the whole of southern India and Sri Lanka, and is the site of many fine Hindu temples. Anamalai University library contains a collection of very ancient manuscripts.

It was the capital of the Chola dynasty until the 14th century. The Nataraja temple celebrates the dance contest won by Shiva.
