Chieti| Capital of Chieti province in Abruzzi region, south-central Italy, 60 km/37 mi east of L'Aquila, built on a hill near the River Pescara 12 km/7 mi from the Adriatic Sea; population (1990) 57,500. Industries include paper, engineering, sugar refining, production of foodstuffs, textiles, and building materials. There are Roman remains and a Gothic cathedral dedicated to St Justin. The Theatine religious order was founded here. Tourism based on skiing is important. |
