Chihara, Paul (1938– )

US composer. He studied with Nadi Boulanger in Paris, France, and Ernst Pepping in Berlin, Germany. He taught at University of California, Los Angeles, 1966–74, and was composer-in-residence with the San Francisco Ballet from 1980. His music has employed serial and aleatory techniques.

Works

Orchestral

viola concerto (1963); Forest Music for orchestra; symphony (1982).

Chamber

string quartet (1965), Redwood for viola and percussion (1967), Sequoia for string quartet and tape (1984).

Instrumental

Rain Music, tape collage (1968), Ceremony series for various instrumental groups (I–V, 1971–75).

Church music

Magnificat (1966), Missa Carminum (1976).

Ballet

Mistletoe Bride (1978), The Tempest (1980).
