Chihuly, Dale (1941– )

US glass maker. He has become internationally recognized as an innovative creator of colourful blown-glass abstract sculptures and architectural installations. He founded the Pilchuck Glass School near Seattle, Washington in 1971 to stimulate others to take up the craft of blowing glass. His works, inspired by nature, often include spheres and tree shapes with entwining branches.

He was born in Tacoma, Washington, a setting that inspires much of his work. He took his M.F.A. at the Rhode Island School of Design. His exhibition ‘Chihuly Over Venice’, which included 14 outdoor chandeliers around the city, heightened his popularity in 1996.
