United Nations document designed to make the well-being of children an international obligation. It was adopted in 1989 and covers children from birth up to 18. It laid down international standards for: provision of a name, nationality, health care, education, rest, and play; protection from commercial or sexual exploitation, physical or mental abuse, and engagement in warfare; participation in decisions affecting a child's own future.
