Chillicothe

City in Peoria County, central Illinois, USA, on the Illinois River, where it forms Douglas Lake, 24 km/15 mi northeast of Peoria; population (1990) 6,000. Chillicothe is a transportation centre in a lake resort area.

It is across Douglas Lake from the Woodford County Conservation Area, and just south of the Marshall State Fish and Wildlife Area.

Chillicothe

City in northwestern Missouri, USA, 104 km/65 mi east of St Joseph; seat of Livingston County; population (2000) 9,000. It is a trade and processing centre for a region that grows wheat, raises beef and dairy cattle, and mines coal and limestone. There is also some light manufacturing.

Founded in 1837, Chillicothe grew with the coming of the Hannibal & St Joseph Railroad (1859).

Chillicothe

City in south-central Ohio, USA, on the Scioto River, 72 km/45 mi south of Columbus; seat of Ross County; population (2000) 21,800. It is a trade and distribution centre in a fertile agricultural area. Paper, shoes, aluminium products, building materials, and steel springs are among the goods manufactured here.

Founded in 1796, its name is Algonquian for ‘principal town’. In 1800 Chillicothe became the capital of the Northwest Territory, and it was later (1803–10, 1812–16) the capital of Ohio. The Chillicothe Gazette, founded in 1800, is the oldest continuously published newspaper west of the Alleghenies. Adena, an 1807 Georgian mansion designed by Benjamin Latrobe, is here, as are many notable Greek Revival structures. The Mound City Group National Monument is 5 km/3 mi to the north.
