Chilon of Sparta (lived 6th century BC)

Spartan ephor (one of five annually elected magistrates) 556 BC and later known as one of the Seven Sages of Greece. He was reputed to have ‘bridled’ the power of the Spartan kings, and is the author of the maxim ‘know thyself’.

Although little is known of him, he was an important figure in Spartan history. He is alleged to have died of joy when his son gained the prize for boxing at the Olympic Games.
