Chimayo

Community in Rio Arriba and Santa Fe Counties, northern New Mexico, USA, 34 km/21 mi north of Santa Fe; population (1990) 2,800. An agricultural trade centre, Chimayo handles local apples, chilli peppers, and grain. It has also been a noted weaving centre since 1805.

Formerly a Tewa pueblo, later a Spanish frontier post, Chimayo's sanctuary (1813) and chapel are both much visited for their reputed healing powers.
