Mountainous province in the Andean sierra of central Ecuador; area 6,522 sq km/2,518 sq mi; population (1996) 407,876. The inactive volcano Chimborazo, the highest peak in Ecuador, is located in the province. The capital is Riobamba. The regional economy is based on mining and the production of tobacco.
