Chimborazo

Mountainous province in the Andean sierra of central Ecuador; area 6,522 sq km/2,518 sq mi; population (1996) 407,876. The inactive volcano Chimborazo, the highest peak in Ecuador, is located in the province. The capital is Riobamba. The regional economy is based on mining and the production of tobacco.

Inactive Andean volcano in Chimborazo province, central Ecuador, 29 km/18 mi west of Riobamba. At an altitude of 6,310 m/20,702 ft above sea level, this is the highest peak in the Ecuadorean Andes.

Chimborazo

Mountain in Ecuador, South America, which at 6,310 m/20,702 ft is the highest peak in the Ecuadorean Andes. It is an extinct volcano, with a snow-cap and 16 major glaciers. The mountain also gives its name to a province in Ecuador: area 5,783 sq km/2,233 sq mi; population (2001) 403,600; capital, Riobamba.

In the 18th century, before exploration of the Himalayas, Europeans believed Chimborazo to be the world's highest mountain. The first ascent was made by the British climber Edward Whymper in 1880.
