chimurenga

Zimbabwean pop music developed in the 1970s, particularly by Thomas Mapfumo (1945– ), transposing to electric guitar the sound of the mbira, or thumb piano, an instrument of the region. Mapfumo used traditional rhythms and melodies in new ways combined with a political message.
