Zhenjiang

City and port in Jiangsu province, eastern China, on the south bank of the Chang Jiang, 70 km/43 mi below Nanjing; population (1994) 517,600. Situated at the junction of the Chang Jiang with the Grand Canal, it may have been the original head of the Chang Jiang delta. Machinery, chemicals and paper are manufactured here.

Zhenjiang was founded in the 6th century BC. It was declared open to foreign trade under international treaty in 1861.
