Chinandega

Town in Nicaragua and administrative capital of the department of Chinandega, lying 19 km/12 mi from the northwestern coast; population (1995 est) 97,400. The town is the commercial centre for a rich agricultural district growing mainly cotton, bananas, and sugar cane. Industries include tanning and the processing of rice and coffee. Products include cotton-textiles, furniture, pottery, and perfume. There are also sawmills and an ironworks. Nearby is the largest sugar refinery in Central America.

The town has rail links to Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, and the port of Corinto, and also has an airfield. The sugar refinery is connected to the town by 6 km/4 mi of railway. Also nearby is the old port of El Realejo, founded by Spanish colonists in 1534. Chinandega is one of the hottest and driest towns in Nicaragua.
