Chincoteague Island

Island in Accomack County, eastern Virginia, USA, in Chincoteague Bay, inside (to the northwest) the barrier island of Assateague; the island is 11 km/7 mi from northeast to southwest and up to 1.6 km/1 mi wide. In addition to tourism, shellfishing is an important local industry. Chincoteague is the main town; population (1990) 3,600.

Every July the island has a pony penning, a roundup of wild horses from Chincoteague and Assateague.
