Chinese wall

Virtual barrier between different departments within an organization, usually required by law. The Chinese wall prevents information from passing between the separated departments. Chinese walls are common in merchant banks where one department may have access to privileged information. For example, a corporate financing department would not be expected to pass on price-sensitive information about a pending merger or acquisition to an in-house share dealing department.
