Chioggia

Town in Veneto region, northeast Italy, built on an island at the south end of the Venetian lagoon, 25 km/15 mi southwest of Venice; population (1993 est) 53,800. Chioggia is a major fishing port. The town is built on piles, connected with the mainland by a stone bridge, and is intersected by three canals. The Venetians defeated the Genoese fleet nearby in 1379. There is a 17th-century cathedral.

Red, golden, and Chioggia beets are the three basic types you can find.
