Chipata

Town and capital of Eastern province, Zambia, located on the Malawian border; population (2001 est) 84,500. The tobacco industry is important locally. Chipata is the nearest centre to the Luangwa Valley, one of the richest wildlife areas in Africa. Other agricultural activity centres on cattle and groundnuts.

In 1898 Chipata was planned as the capital of northeastern Rhodesia.
