Chippenham

Town in north Wiltshire, England; population (2001) 33,200. It is situated 20 km/12 mi northeast of Bath and 35 km/22 mi east of Bristol. A bridge with 21 arches crosses the River Avon here. The main industries are meat- and milk-processing, engineering, and electronics. Chippenham was once a centre for the making of broadcloth.

There is a Georgian church designed by John Wood the Younger and dating from 1779 at nearby Hardenhuish. Chippenham was formerly occupied by the Saxon kings of Wessex, and King Alfred was forced to flee the town when surprised by the Danes.

Lodowicke Muggleton, founder of the Muggletonians, a group of 17th-century radical religious dissidents, is said to have been born in Chippenham.
