Chipperfield, David (1953– )| English architect. Known for his modernist style and minimalist constructions with special attention to materials, function, and light, he won architecture's prestigious Stirling Prize in 2007 for his Museum of Modern Literature/Literaturmuseum der Moderne (LiMo) in Marbach, Germany (2006). |
| He worked with contemporary architects Richard Rogers and Norman Foster before establishing his own firm, David Chipperfield Architects, in 1984. The firm has main offices in London, Berlin, and Milan, and projects in Europe, especially Spain and Germany, the USA, and China. His works include the River and Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames (1998), which won the Royal Fine Art Commission Building of the Year award and National Heritage Museum of the Year in 1999; the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa (2005), which won the American Institute of Architects Award of Excellence in Craft in 2006; and the America's Cup Building in Valencia, Spain (2007), which won the Royal Institute of British Architects European Award and was also shortlisted for the Stirling Prize. |
| Chipperfield was born in London and received his diploma from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London in 1977. Other awards include Germany's Heinrich Tessenow Medal for excellence in architecture (1999) and a CBE for services to architecture in 2004. He has taught classes on architecture in the UK, Spain, and the USA. |
