Chippewa County

County in the eastern Upper Peninsula, northeastern Michigan, USA; area 4,118 sq km/1,590 sq mi; population (1990) 34,600. The county is bounded by Lake Superior (to the northwest), Whitefish Bay (to the north), Lake George (to the northeast), the St Marys River (to the east), and Lake Huron (to the south). It is drained by the Tahquamenon and Munuscong rivers. Its seat is Sault Sainte Marie. This rural county includes Sugar, Neebish, and Drummond islands and large tracts of Hiawatha National Forest and Lake Superior State Forest. There is lumbering, dairying, and commercial fishing; flax and potatoes are grown. Sault Sainte Marie is a port of entry and has manufacturing and shipping.
