Chippewa Falls

City in Chippewa County, west-central Wisconsin, on the Chippewa River, 16 km/10 mi northeast of Eau Claire; population (1990) 12,700. It is a trading centre, set in a farming and dairying region. Butter and other dairy items are produced, and meatpacking and brewing are major industries. Manufactures include computers, textiles, doors and sashes, and tools and dies.

In 1837, the Chippewa gave up their rights to the site, which became a busy sawmill centre. Lake Wissota, 3 km/2 mi east of the city, is the state's largest artificial lake.
