Chipping Campden

Village in north Gloucestershire, England, 14 km/9 mi southeast of Evesham; population (2001) 2,100. In the late medieval period it was a centre of the Cotswold woollen trade. Its High Street has a number of historic buildings dating from the 14th to the 18th centuries.

The Market Hall dates from 1627. St James's church is Perpendicular, with a 15th-century tower and interesting brasses. The remains of the 17th-century Campden House are close to the church.

Hidcote Manor garden, owned by the National Trust, lies 4 mi to the northeast.

Ashbee, who took a group of poor families from the East End of London to set up a workshop at Chipping Campden, remained designers and had most of the work executed by craftsmen many of whom, apart from having more agreeable surroundings, were little better off than they had been.
I went there to attend a wedding in a scenic area called Gloucestershire (pronounced ``Wooster'') near a lovely little town called Chipping Campden (tourism motto: ``We've Got Your Sheep'').
