Chipping Norton

Market town in Oxfordshire, England, 31 km/19 mi north of Oxford; population (2001) 6,000. A former Cotswold wool town, it has a 14th–15th-century church, 17th-century almshouses, and a 16th-century Guildhall. At 213 m/700 ft, it is the highest town in Oxfordshire. The Rollright Stones are nearby.

Bliss Mill, a 19th-century tweed mill, is a prominent landmark here; it ceased operating in 1980 and has been converted into apartments and leisure facilities.

The town's annual ‘Mop Fair’ dates from the reign of King John.

Born sometime in 1581 at Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, Elizabeth Jane Weston was taken as a child to Bohemia where her stepfather Edward Kelley worked as alchemist to Rudolf II in Prague (xv).
