Chirchiq

Town in Tashkent wiloyat (region), Uzbekistan, 30 km/19 mi northeast of the city of Tashkent; population (2001 est) 183,300. It is the market centre for a productive agricultural region, where fruit and vegetables are widely grown. Farm machinery is manufactured here, and a large chemical plant produces nitrate fertilizers. The city's location in the Chatkal Mountains has made it a popular winter holiday resort.

Chirchiq was founded in 1935; the town developed to service the construction of a hydroelectric scheme being built on the Chirchiq River.
