Chironomus

Chironomus

Chief genus of the midge and gnat. The wormlike larva, which is red due to the haemoglobin in its blood, is called a bloodworm and is used by anglers for bait. It lives in mud and wet sand, where it is preyed upon by birds and fishes.

Chironomus is in family Chironomidae, class Insecta, phylum Arthropoda.
