Chisholm, Erik (1904–1965)

Scottish pianist, organist, conductor, and composer. He studied composition under Donald Tovey and in 1934 was awarded a Doctor of Music degree at Edinburgh University. After touring in Canada he returned to Glasgow as an organist and conductor, and founded a society for the propagation of modern music in 1930. He became conductor of the Glasgow Grand Opera Company, with which he gave interesting performances, particularly of Berlioz's operas (for example Les Troyens/The Trojans in 1935). In 1947 he became principal of the Cape Town School of Music.

opera Isle of Youth (libretto by composer, 1941); ballets The Forsaken Mermaid (1942) and The Pied Piper of Hamelin; two symphonies, etc.
