THIS IS, so far as I am aware, the first book in English containing a comprehensive look at the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the long festering insurgency in that area. The cultural quandary of indigenous people was summed up for the Assembly by Bimal Bhikkhu, a Buddhist monk from the Chakma tribes of the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, when he noted that indigenous people do not want to become "a museum for anthropologists"; instead, they want the right to educate their children in order to achieve the "harmonious development of the human potential". India was criticized for its overstaying in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, for its carrying off Pakistani prisoners and military equipment, and its commissioning of the Farakka barrage. |
