Chittenden County

County in northwestern Vermont, USA; area 1,399 sq km/540 sq mi; population (1990) 131,800. Lake Champlain is the western boundary; the Green Mountains are in the east. The area is drained by the Winooski, Brown, Huntington, and Lamoille rivers. Burlington is the county seat. Vermont's most heavily populated county, Chittenden is also the site of Mount Mansfield, the highest point in the state. The economy is based on lake and mountain resorts, dairy and maple products, fruit, granite, talc, the manufacture of textiles, wood and metal products, and Burlington's commerce and electronics plants.
