Chitungwiza

Town in central Zimbabwe, 25 km/16 mi south of Harare; population (2002 est) 321,800. Chitungwiza has developed since the 1970s from two small townships, St Mary's and Seke, with a combined population of less than 25,000, into the third-largest urban area in the country. The proximity of the town to Harare has proven to be a major disadvantage in terms of attracting investment, with the result that Chitungwiza has few commercial and industrial enterprises and relies heavily upon Harare for employment and services.
