Chiusi

Town in Tuscany region, north-central Italy, 60 km/37 mi southeast of Siena, on a hillside near Lake Chiusi; it is the centre of a fertile agricultural district; population (1991) 9,100. In ancient times Chiusi was one of the cities of the Etruscan Confederation, and was the home of the Etruscan ruler Lars Porsena. Traces remain nearby of Etruscan fortresses, and grottoes which served as tombs; pottery and other artefacts found here are housed in the museums of Florence and Chiusi.

In the Middle Ages the town was plagued by malaria from the surrounding swamps.
