spider plant

African plant belonging to the lily family. Two species (C. comosum and C. elatum) are popular house plants. They have long, narrow, variegated leaves and produce flowering shoots from which the new plants grow, hanging below the main plant. The flowers are small and white. Spider plants absorb toxins from the air and therefore help to purify the atmosphere around them. (Genus Chlorophytum, family Liliaceae.)
