Chmura, Gabriel (1946– )

Polish-born conductor. He emigrated to Israel in 1955 and studied in Vienna, winning the 1971 Karajan Competition in Berlin. He was musical director in Aachen 1974–82 and with the Bochum Symphony Orchestra from 1982. He made his US debut in 1980, with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and has also guest-conducted with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. He has led opera performances in Paris and Munich, and Werther at Parma in 1990. He was musical director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra at Ottawa 1987–90.
