Choco

Department in western Colombia, bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean to the North, Panama to the northwest, and the Cordillera Occidental to the east; area 5,120 sq km/1,977 sq mi; population (1996) 406,199. The capital is Quibdó. The Atrato and San Juan rivers, both of which are navigable, run north–south through the length of the department. Platinum is mined in the area.
